Something I've been working on for a few weeks now. I want to submit it to the Digital Art Masters 5 book as well as possibly try my luck with it in the IFX Cover Competition.

I'm unsure if I'm ready to call it finished, but its certainly almost there. Unfortunately its failed to attract much attention on forums so I thought I'd put what I have so far up on here. Please feel free to drop me your thoughts on it but try to keep it constructive please :)

The picture is derived from events in Guardian Soul but is adjusted to better fit the contest brief. All I can say is that something 'similar' to this happens and it involves Noah as depicted. I Didn't really know what to call it lol so ignore the title, doesn't really bare any relevance ^^;

I know this is an old picture but I think the reason it never got much attention is composition. You've put contrast and highlights in the wrong places and there is almost no focal point to the image or if there is one it would be, to me, the wave underneath his hand. desaturating the background more would have helped a lot or picking more significantly different colors from the character's face/clothing to the wall behind him. If the lightning had been as bright as or brighter than the foam on the waves it would also have helped, also if it cast light on the figure at least. (closer examination that seems to be lightning wrapped water? but brighter still would've been better) If the focal point should be the character's face, as I would guess his face or the space between his face and hand should be, that area of the picture should be the most something - the brightest, the highest contrast, the darkest, most saturated, something. as it is the level of contrast and saturation is similar to everything else in the picture and it doesn't really stand out. Compositionally the most interesting piece of the picture is actually the negative space of the sky/sky reflection in water on the left side.

Please don't take this the wrong way, it's meant to be helpful and constructive :)

Not at all. It's the pitfalls of being self taught I guess. You just don't look at things such as negative space, composition, focus, contrast and lighting when you're first starting out. If you do, you don't usually recognise that you're doing it because you haven't been trained to. I certainly wasn't at the time of painting this and, although I think I've got better at it, I still don't consider it enough even now I don't think.

A lot of my older works are over saturated, compositional nightmares that I just want to hide away in cupboard somewhere when I look back at them. Yet they do document the journey I've taken and remind me where I was and how far I've traveled (if I can be considered to have even moved lol)

Thanks for taking the time to comment, I do take the constructive and helpful input on board. :)

I'm always glad if I can be helpful! I understand about wanting to hide the older stuff but if I hid much of mine I'd hardly have anything... I don't do nearly enough!

This is seriously awsome!
I seriously love the nonchalant way he's "standing"? on the water.
The water itself is done pretty good imho, it looks real but at the same time has that "unreal" (can't think of any better term) that your work has. (which is a positive thing!!)

The only point of critique I have is that his face looks "off" a little bit. The left side (from our point of view) of his face looks like it has a sort of bulge on it. Sort of like the right side is turned inward some like a normal face but the left side is turned outward somewhat. (Hope that makes any sense...)

Love the attention to detail, the chain looks so real and the eyes are just too awsome.

Love your work as usual!

Greetz,
Fal;)
